Directly across from the Alftand Cathedral entrance is the first of many buildings scattered throughout the cavern:. One distinctive section of the cavern is the ruined Dwemer city, found in the western part of the cavern.
It contains several buildings:. The entrances related to Mzinchaleft are north of the city, namely the door to Mzinchaleft Gatehouse in the northwestern corner of the cavern and the Great Lift at Mzinchaleft. Two other buildings are also found along the northern wall of the cavern:. The southern part of Blackreach is dominated by waterfalls plunging into a lake far below the rest of Blackreach. Skyrim doesn't have many named dragons, totaling only sixteen if the Skyrim DLCs are included in the count.
Unlike many of the dragons that spawn throughout the world, the named dragons often have their own lore and backstory for those eager to learn. The main questline of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sees Alduin resurrecting his most loyal named lieutenants to slay the Dragonborn, connecting them to the ancient Dragon War of Skyrim. However, it appears that Vulthuryol was not one of Alduin's servants. He is not risen from the dead so far as is known and does not venture above ground to wreak havoc on the Nordic Holds.
The Falmer and Falmer Servants that are patrolling around the orb may be his only subjects, though Vulthuryol's reason for lingering underground isn't explained. Vulthuryol isn't an average dragon, as he bears an Ancient rating that will make defeating him difficult for lower-level Dragonborn. Despite this, living in the dark abyss of Skyrim's Blackreach seems to have dissuaded him from taking flight.
Throughout the battle, Vulthuryol will stay on the ground following his initial entrance into the area, which makes Vulthuryol's battle one of the most unique, as he is one of the few dragons that melee builds in Skyrim will be able to fight without running around waiting for him to land. There are seven possible entrances and exits for players to consider when exploring Blackreach. Each of them requires a different method of unlocking, and some can only be unlocked while in Blackreach.
Having every entrance open can help players out of tough spots, so it is worth seeking all seven. If players attempt to reach any of the Great Lifts before unlocking them, they will encounter an impassable barrier. With an entirely unique ecosystem that isn't seen in any other location in Skyrim, and which looks like it belongs in Morrowind more than anywhere else, it's hard to forget any part of what Blackreach has to offer. It is a dungeon that you can very easily spend hours wandering around inside of.
Before entering the main cavern of Blackreach, you will have to contend with multiple Dwarven Spiders and Spheres alongside a couple of Centurions. Like most other Dwemer ruins, there are also many Falmer lurking inside the dungeon that can prove to be problematic for unprepared explorers, as they can very easily overwhelm you with sheer numbers, if not the various poisons and magic they like to use.
Once inside Blackreach, you will have more room to fight, but also more enemies to contend with, including even more Dwarven Centurions that are just waiting to be activated. Thankfully, the Centurions are inactive until you either pull the lever on their frame or attack them first, making them a little easier than most other Centurions to deal with.
In the center of Blackreach, there is a Debate Hall with a large, orange orb hanging above it that not only holds multiple Falmer but also Falmer Servants, people unfortunate enough to have become trapped inside Blackreach at one point or another and forced to work for the Falmer. This orb overhanging the Debate Hall is also the source of a boss fight against a dragon, Vulthuryol, which is a fairly average fight all things considered.
The main difference between Vulthuryol and other dragons is that they won't fly around to avoid your attacks, preferring to crawl around on the ground and launch Fire Breath shouts instead. This fight can be instigated by using the Unrelenting Force Shout on the orb itself, which will cause it to make a gong sound before summoning the dragon.
